We recently had an opportunity to speak with Brian Cranston at the premiere of the third season of Breaking Bad and asked him about his upcoming films. "They're great projects, both of them," stated the actor. "I have more to shoot on John Carter Of Mars but it's a terrific film directed by Andrew Stanton and starring Taylor Kitsch," Cranston continued. "It was fun." We followed up by asking the actor if he had been familiar with the novels that the film is based on before he took the part? "No I wasn't familiar at all with them," he admitted. "Andrew Stanton introduced me to them so I didn't know that Edgar Rice Burroughs had even written this stuff. (Stanton) was a longtime boyhood fan of the novels so he was excited about doing the film." Cranston went on to tell us a little bit about the character that he plays in the film. "My character is a civil war Colonel and a nemesis at the start to Taylor as John Carter and then we find a common bond."

From Collider.com - “Can you talk about who you play in the film and are you excited to be in this huge movie?
Cranston: Very excited. I liked the script first and foremost. That’s why I went in to meet with Andrew. And then his infectious enthusiasm for the movie and for characters and it just….I caught his bug. And I said, yes, so I’ll be a part of it. I’ll do whatever you want me to do. And so I play, during the Civil War America time….this story takes place part-time Civil War America and Mars, which has no time. So my character is a Northern Colonel who is dogging John Carter to be a part of the government. We need his help. He’s an excellent tracker and marksman and that sort of thing. And in the Arizona Territories, the Apaches are running wild, so I need his help and he won’t do it. He doesn’t want to have anything to do with anything. His family was obliterated during the War. It was horrible and he wants to be a part of no man’s government. So I keep after him and keep after him and track him down and have a conversation with him and have to use some physical force on him and he keeps breaking out and I keep tracking him down. And finally we end up in a cave and in this cave are some magical things that happen. And that transports him and it’s really quite fascinating and I look forward to it.
I’m so excited for this movie. Andrew’s first live-action. You’re on hiatus now and you’re filming…now you just did the one week on John Carter, does that mean you’re wrapped?
Cranston: No, I have 2 more weeks to go. We’ll pick that up in Utah in April.”

From ScFI Wire - “Certainly I don't want to call it Avatar 2," Cameron said at the Visual Effects Society Awards ceremony in Century City, Calif., on Sunday, where he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. "He's not an avatar anymore, is he? Maybe we'll call it Na'vi."
As for the story, a second Avatar film would emphasize the spiritual aspect of the Na'vi even further than the original, he said. Avatar was primarily an action/adventure with the spiritual nature of the Na'vi at its heart. Now that audiences have embraced the Na'vi culture, Cameron can give it more weight in the sequels.”

I like this, it will be even further from John Carter of Mars ( and later The Gods of Mars ) tone and plot wise - Jeff

Michael Giacchino is our Man for Mars. I’ve not only being dying to see this movie my whole life but listen to Barsoomian Soundtrack Goodness (tm) day after day after day.

“I'm always looking for the thing that inspires me or sets the fire in me somehow. I don't look for jobs per se, just things that will be fun for me to do and things I can get passionate about," he says.
That's why he gravitates to directors like J.J. Abrams, whom he has worked with on “Star Trek," “Lost" and “Alias"; Brad Bird on “Ratatouille" and “The Incredibles"; and “Up's" Pete Docter, because he feels they are just as passionate as he is about the music in their films. T: Marc Anthony in Rome, Solomon Kane, a Knight Templar in the upcoming Ironclad… You seem to be embracing macho fighting men of late...

P: I’m very good with a sword – there aren’t many of us who can do that. I was fortunate to be taught at drama school by one of the greatest fight choreographers ever, Bill Hobbs, who did The Three Musketeers and The Duellists.
And I did it for three years at the Royal Shakespeare Company. If you do three years of fights every single night, you become pretty handy with a blade.

T: What’s your favourite movie swordfight?

P: The Mandy Patinkin-Cary Elwes fight in The Princess Bride is one of the most beautiful pieces of swordplay you can ever imagine. My favourite swordfighter of all time, though, is Oliver Reed because Ollie looked like he really was trying to kill people in the Musketeer movies. I asked Bill Hobbs, “How did he do that?” and he said, “Because he /was/ trying to kill people.” The stuntmen wouldn’t fight with him – they had to keep getting new ones to come to the set because he was a vicious, crazed animal. I liked that idea for Solomon – I wanted him to look like he was trying to kill people.

T: On to bigger, better things… How is John Carter Of Mars going?

P: It’s a great project. Huge. There aren’t many bona fide geniuses working in our industry but Andrew Stanton is one of them… Wall-E and Finding Nemo are extraordinary. If you only look at him in terms of his storytelling skills, that’s enough – and on top of that, look at the beauty, the soul, the heart he puts into those films. It’s staggering what he achieves. Funnily enough, I don’t have much to do in the first film. I’ve taken this basically because they’ve said, “Your part gets bigger and bigger as the films go on.”

T: You’re playing a Red Martian named Kantos Kan, right?

P: Yes, he’s a fighter pilot. He’s the captain of a massive naval airship so in the first film, I do a little bit of steering, a little bit of rescuing, shit like that. He’s quite flash, he has a few jokes – he’s like a naughty, sexy uncle. That’s the way I’ve been told to play it.

T:Are you wearing a costume or a mocap suit?

P: It’s not mocap with us [the Red Martians]. We’re humanoid, we’re in costumes, but there are other actors who are playing pure mocap characters. It’s hard to talk about it because I don’t really know what it’s going to look like. So much of it is in Andrew’s head and with his designers. We’re on a real set but it’s surrounded by green screen so there’s going to be stuff out there that I have no idea what it is but I know it will be extraordinary.

T:How would you describe your costume?

P: Armour. [Laughs] It looks cool. It’s very Dan Dare.

Really good, like Magnificent Seven in a castle shot in the style of Saving Private Ryan. And now I'm doing John Carter Of Mars with Taylor Kitsch from Wolverine. I play Kantos Kan, who is a Martian fighter pilot.
That's a cool name.
He's cool. He's very cool. And it's all a bit of a laugh. It's big, gigantic and it's by Andrew Stanton, who did WALL-E, and he knows a thing or two about storytelling. He's one of the best storytellers on the planet right now.”

And Heyuguys! has an audio interview. He talks a bit about being on the set and the fliers. He mentions that they are solar powered, but I wonder if that’s just a stand in for the martian 8th ray...

EDIT - I’ve got more ! From The Times Online “What can you tell us about John Carter of Mars? It is going to be pretty extraordinary. The reason I wanted to do it is because I’d get to work with Andrew Stanton, who made WALL-E. My character helps out John Carter whenever he’s in trouble. He’s slightly older, more cynical, quippy — he’s a kind of Han Solo figure, I guess. Apparently George Lucas took a lot of the mythology from Edgar Rice Burrough’s Jon Carter books and put it into Star Wars. It’s a great part. It’s not a huge part in the first film but it gets bigger throughout the trilogy.”

Jeff - my only concern is that Han stole Star Wars. I really bought into The Adventures of Luke Skywalker but that wasn’t really what we got. At least this time Carter really does get the girl.
